Bryan Nixon, MA, LPC

Founder, Kenmoor Clinical Director
(He/Him/His)
Bryan is the founder of Mindful Counseling GR and is a Licensed Professional Counselor serving the Grand Rapids area. He deeply believes that as human beings we are formed in relationship, harmed in relationship, and healed in relationship. The way we show up in the world, our strengths, our defenses, our struggles are all informed by our relational experiences. ⁣Therefore, he pays close attention to the way the therapeutic relationship takes shape with each of his clients because whatever is not working in your relational life out there will inevitably be repeated within the therapeutic relationship at some point. Bryan believes that we repeat patterns of relating because the unconscious part of us truly wants to be known, healed, and integrated in order for us to live a more expansive, free and fulfilling life. It is trying to give us the opportunity to work through our old wounds.

Healing wisdom emerges from the space between client and therapist. As this happens over time you will begin to feel less stuck. Your self-limiting beliefs, nagging anxiety, depression, shame from your past, and your inner critic will begin to have less power over your life. The therapeutic relationship exists as a healing context where your style of relating to your world can be authentically explored. Both therapist and client have the opportunity to work with the relationship that forms between them with curiosity and vulnerability. ⁣In this way old relational wounds can become conscious and healing can occur that offers you deeper freedom.

Bryan delights in the deep honor of walking alongside his clients through the process of insight, healing and transformation by way of the therapeutic encounter. Additionally, he specializes in a depth-oriented, psychodynamic approach, while also integrating elements of mindfulness and body awareness in order to invite you to embrace the fullness of who you are. He holds to the belief that you are much more than a list of symptoms.

Bryan received his Master’s of Arts in Counseling Psychology from The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology in 2007. He has been working in the field of psychology since 2002 and specifically as a counselor since 2007.

“Psychotherapy practiced from the perspective that the human person is complex, nuanced and in search of deeper meaning in their lives, requires the therapist to be a person who can sit with and participate in the heartaches of another person’s life. Bryan is such a person. He understands how common it is for us to split off aspects of ourselves we find unsavory and the subsequent negative impact on both the self and others, when we do so. By diligently attending to the unconscious and the unfolding repetitions in the therapeutic relationship, Bryan skillfully guides his patients towards change and transformation. He is kind, thoughtful and artful in his approach to this sacred relationship.”
